The High Standard M101 Dura-Matic is a .22 Long Rifle semi-automatic pistol that was produced by the High Standard Manufacturing Company of Hamden, Connecticut. Introduced in 1954, the Dura-Matic was designed as an economical entry-level pistol, positioned below High Standard’s more refined target models in both price and feature set. It uses a simple blowback action, feeding from a ten-round detachable magazine housed in the grip. The barrel was offered in both 4.5-inch and 6.5-inch lengths, and the gun features fixed sights, a thumb safety, and a magazine disconnect safety that prevents the pistol from firing when the magazine is removed.

High Standard built its reputation on producing some of the finest .22 caliber pistols ever made, and the Dura-Matic was their way of reaching budget-conscious shooters without sacrificing reliability. The M101 designation refers to the first series of the Dura-Matic line. What set it apart from its more expensive stablemates was its takedown mechanism – rather than the push-button barrel release found on the target models, the Dura-Matic used a simpler system that kept manufacturing costs down. The frame was made from a lightweight alloy, which gave the pistol a comfortable heft without being overly heavy.

Despite its economy-grade positioning, the M101 Dura-Matic proved to be a dependable and accurate little pistol. It served well for casual target shooting, plinking, and as an introductory handgun for new shooters. High Standard eventually updated the design through several series numbers, but the M101 remains the original and is a favorite among collectors who appreciate the full range of High Standard’s production. In an era when the company was supplying pistols to Olympic shooters and the United States military, the Dura-Matic demonstrated that High Standard could deliver quality at every price point.
