The Stevens Model 311H is a side-by-side double-barrel shotgun produced by the J. Stevens Arms Company, a subsidiary of Savage Arms. The Model 311 series has roots going back to the 1920s and became one of the most widely produced American-made double-barrel shotguns of the twentieth century. The “H” designation indicates a particular grade within the line, typically featuring a hardwood stock and a utilitarian finish suited to hard field use rather than display. Stevens offered these guns in 12, 16, 20 gauge, and .410 bore, making them versatile across a range of hunting applications.
The 311H uses a boxlock action with dual triggers, allowing the shooter to select which barrel to fire. The barrels are typically choked differently – often improved cylinder and modified, or modified and full – giving the hunter flexibility for shots at varying distances. The top lever breaks the action open for loading and unloading, and simple extractors lift the spent shells for easy removal. The design is mechanically straightforward, which contributes to the gun’s reputation for durability and ease of maintenance.
Stevens double-barrel shotguns were the affordable American alternative to imported side-by-sides, and the Model 311 in its various iterations put a quality double gun within reach of hunters on a modest budget. Production spanned several decades, with the 311 series continuing in one form or another into the 1980s. The 311H remains a common and well-regarded working shotgun, equally at home chasing quail through brush country or standing guard behind a farmhouse door. Its straightforward design and honest construction have earned it a loyal following among shooters who value function above all else.
